It's become common practice to evaluate a skincare product primarily by reading its ingredient list — checking for a hero active and scanning for anything considered undesirable. That habit is a reasonable starting point, but it leaves out an entire layer of what actually determines how a product performs: formulation.

Why concentration and pH aren't on the label

Ingredient lists in most markets are ordered by concentration (highest to lowest) but rarely disclose exact percentages, and never disclose pH. Two products can list an identical active ingredient yet perform very differently, because one includes it at a meaningfully higher concentration, in a more stable delivery system, or at a pH range where the ingredient is actually active rather than mostly neutralized.

Stability: why packaging and storage matter

Some ingredients — vitamin C in its L-ascorbic acid form is the most commonly cited example — degrade with exposure to light, air, or heat. A well-formulated product accounts for this with opaque or airless packaging and appropriate preservation; a product that ignores it can lose meaningful potency before it's even opened, regardless of what the label claims.

Delivery systems: getting an ingredient where it needs to go

  • Encapsulation — wrapping an ingredient (often retinol) to control its release and reduce initial irritation.
  • Emulsification — combining oil- and water-based ingredients into a stable cream or lotion rather than two separate layers.
  • Penetration enhancers — ingredients included specifically to help an active reach its intended layer of skin.
  • Buffering agents — included to help stabilize a formula's pH within an effective, tolerable range.

What this means for reading a label

None of this means ingredient lists are useless — they remain a genuinely useful screening tool for known irritants, allergens, or a completely absent hero ingredient. But treating the ingredient list as the entire story overstates what a shopper can know from packaging alone. Brand transparency about concentration, third-party formulation reviews, and a company's general formulation reputation all add context an ingredient list can't provide by itself.
