How Active Ingredients Work
'Active ingredient' is a catch-all term covering several genuinely different mechanisms — understanding the category helps explain why they don't all get combined the same way.
In skincare, an 'active' generally refers to an ingredient included specifically for a targeted effect, as opposed to a base or vehicle ingredient like water or a thickener. But 'active' isn't one mechanism — it's several distinct categories that happen to share a marketing label. Understanding which category an ingredient belongs to explains a lot about how it's used, how fast it works, and what it should (or shouldn't) be combined with.
Exfoliants — working on existing cells
AHAs and BHAs work directly on the skin's surface, loosening the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed more evenly. This is a physical/chemical action on cells that already exist, which is part of why results (smoother texture, less dullness) can appear relatively quickly, but also why over-exfoliation is a real risk — the effect is happening right at the surface, in direct contact with living tissue underneath.

Vitamin C and similar antioxidants don't exfoliate or signal cell turnover — they help neutralize the effects of everyday environmental stress (UV exposure, pollution) on skin. This is a defensive rather than a transformative mechanism, which is part of why antioxidants are generally used preventively, alongside SPF, rather than as a treatment for an existing concern.
Humectants and emollients — managing water and lipids
Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides and squalane aren't 'treating' a concern in the same sense as the categories above — they're managing the skin's water and lipid balance directly. This is arguably the most foundational category, since a well-hydrated, barrier-intact base affects how well every other active is tolerated.
