pH isn't a marketing buzzword — it's a specific, measurable property that genuinely affects whether an active ingredient works as intended.
pH measures how acidic or alkaline a substance is, on a scale from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline), with 7 as neutral. Healthy skin sits on the mildly acidic side, generally cited in the range of roughly 4.5 to 5.5, sometimes referred to as the skin's 'acid mantle.' That natural acidity plays a role in barrier function and in supporting the skin's resident microorganisms, which is part of why pH gets discussed alongside barrier health.
Why cleanser pH is a recurring topic
