Ingredients produced through fermentation or lab cultivation rather than traditional extraction are reshaping how beauty brands talk about sourcing and sustainability.
'Biotech beauty' is an umbrella term for ingredients produced using biological processes — fermentation, cell cultivation, precision biology — rather than being extracted directly from plants, animals or purely synthesized through conventional chemistry. It's not a single ingredient or brand claim; it's a production method that can apply to many different ingredient types.
Why fermentation-derived ingredients are gaining ground
Fermentation — using microorganisms to convert raw materials into a target ingredient — has existed in cosmetics for a long time, but has expanded significantly as a way to produce consistent, scalable ingredients without depending on large volumes of a specific plant crop or animal source. It's also frequently framed as a more traceable, more consistent alternative to agricultural sourcing, since fermentation conditions can be tightly controlled.
Lab-cultivated actives
Beyond fermentation, some ingredients once sourced from rare or slow-growing plants are now produced through cell cultivation — growing the specific plant cells that produce a desired compound, rather than farming the whole plant. This is often positioned as both a sustainability story and a purity story, since the resulting ingredient can be isolated with less variability than a field-grown crop.
Sustainability claims deserve the same scrutiny as efficacy claims
Because biotech production methods are genuinely newer and less familiar to most shoppers than traditional farming or synthesis, sustainability claims attached to them are harder to independently verify from a product label alone. A fermentation process can be more resource-efficient than field agriculture in some cases and less so in others, depending on inputs, energy source and scale — the honest answer is that 'biotech' is not automatically synonymous with 'lower footprint,' even when it's marketed that way. Ingredient transparency and, where available, third-party sustainability certification remain more reliable signals than the production-method label by itself.
